Middle School students participate in clothes drive for Australian Red Cross

This term, students and families within the Middle School donated winter clothing to Australian Red Cross. The clothes drive saw involvement from Y5-9 students as a part of their Term 2 community service activity, organised and championed by Y5-6 Ross House and Y7-9 Garbutt House.

This is the first time the Middle School has participated in a clothes drive, inspired by the 2021 Sustainability Committee’s awareness campaign around fast fashion.

Student leaders were pivotal in encouraging donations, speaking at assemblies and keeping donations tidy in classrooms.

“There are people who need clothes that we don’t need anymore, so it felt right to pass them on,” said Y6 Ross House leaders, Ted Carden and Rashika Kakaan. “Seeing the Middle School students donate and work together with care, gave us a sense of pride and gratitude.”

After gathering the donations, student leaders volunteered their lunchtimes to sort the clothing and prepare them for delivery to Red Cross.

“It was amazing seeing how many donations we received from the Middle School community,” said Y9 Garbutt House leader, Samreet Kaur. “The best thing about this community service activity was how everyone in the Middle School worked together to organise donations for people in Ballarat suffering the cold. My heart was touched when I saw all the friendly students and House leaders treating each other with respect and kindness when they sorted through the clothing.”

Thank you to all of the students, staff and families who inundated the Middle School with generous and thoughtful donations that will make a difference to those in need.
