Meet our Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars

Recently, 2024 Year 11 students, Alex Cheesman and Bea Glew, were named Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars, Class of 2025, by The University of Melbourne.

The application process, which saw almost 2,000 students apply, involved answering questions around leadership and community involvement as well as academic achievements.

“Becoming a scholar seemed a bit far from my reality,” said Alex. “But, after visiting The University of Melbourne during their Open Day, I knew it was the right place for me. My motivation to apply stemmed mainly from my desire to study medicine in the future, the support I’ve received from my parents and teachers, and my desire to be a part of a high achieving community.”

“I was pleasantly surprised when I received an acceptance email from the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program, given it is so selective,” said Bea. “The program is set up to allow students to explore opportunities at The University of Melbourne and establish connections with a broad range of students, like myself, who seek to be involved in their communities. I feel very proud to have been accepted.”

The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program aims to provide a supportive community and peer network to allow a seamless transition into university. It also provides resources such as lectures for Units 3 and 4 subjects and revision, access to textbooks and networking opportunities with university staff and students with similar aspirations.

“I am most looking forward to integrating with other scholars, adapting to university life and, ultimately, being able to achieve my dream of studying medicine,” said Alex. “Throughout my scholars journey, I hope to further develop my learning while expressing gratitude for this opportunity and excitement for the years to come.”

“I’m looking forward to meeting other like-minded people and exploring possible university and career options,” said Bea. “I’m not sure what job I’d like in the future, but know that the university will help me explore the pathways available and help inform my choices beyond Year 12 at Clarendon.”

Congratulations to Alex and Bea, who have demonstrated that, with hard work and determination, you can choose your heart’s desire. We look forward to following Alex and Bea on their journeys through the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program.
