Inside our Clarendon community: Old Collegian and parent, Laura Hartmann (2002)

Emily Kennedy and Laura Hartmann

Reflecting on her time as a student at Clarendon, Laura recalls the teachers who encouraged her to try new things, helped develop her self-confidence and inspired her love of learning, qualities she now sees in her daughter, Emily.

When Laura and her husband were considering Emily’s education, Laura’s own school experience was incredibly influential.

“We knew that Clarendon would suit Emily’s love of learning and offer her a wide variety of opportunities,” said Laura. “I have never forgotten when, in Year 12, I sat in a student learning interview with low confidence in maths and uncertain whether I should continue. My teacher, Mr Parker, told me that I could absolutely do it, and I was able to complete Mathematical Methods with a score I was really proud of. I’ve always remembered experiences like that and we wanted Emily to have the same encouragement to challenge herself, try new things and blossom as a young person.”

Since Emily started Prep this year, Laura has seen her confidence grow, along with her willingness to give everything a try. Returning home from school each day, she is excited to teach her parents what she has learned in class and especially enjoys Sounds-Write and Science lessons. She also participates in weekly lunchtime dance classes and speaks fondly of the Junior School’s iconic blue mountain in the playground.

Other factors that influenced the family’s decision to choose Clarendon for Emily included the opportunities to explore her interests beyond the academic curriculum, including performing arts, community service and sport. Connecting with other members of the Clarendon community and being involved in Emily’s school life has also played a significant role in how the family has settled into their school routine.

“I love the supportive community of parents and the opportunities to be involved with the school and participate in Emily’s world,” said Laura. “I enjoy seeing how her learning continues to flourish both inside and outside of the classroom. We also enjoy chatting with parents at the gate each day and have made some lifelong friends to share the next 12+ years of schooling with.”

Laura describes the Clarendon community as “supportive, genuinely interested in each child and committed to helping everyone shine.”
