Meet Mr Matthew Allanby
Position at Clarendon: Year 8 Learning Mentor and teacher
How long have you been working at Clarendon for?
This is my first year at Clarendon and living in Ballarat. Prior to Clarendon, I was teaching at Timbertop which is an all-boarding Year 9 campus between Mansfield and Mt Buller. However, I’m a proud Taswegian by birth but have lived on the mainland since finishing school.
What subjects do you teach?
I teach History to a variety of year levels but I also teach one Year 7 French class. I’m a Year 8 Learning Mentor and a tutor in the Boys Boarding House.
What do you enjoy most about working at Clarendon?
At Clarendon, I really enjoy the eagerness of students to learn and the focus on explicit teaching. I’ve enjoyed learning more about the art and science of teaching at Clarendon and it’s been great to meet so many colleagues who are truly dedicated to their profession in addition to our wonderful students.
Aside from your teaching role, have you taken part in any other activities with the students?
In Term 3, I re-established a real tennis team at Clarendon. Real tennis is the forerunner of lawn tennis and a combination of tennis, squash and chess. Although we’ve started off small, I look forward to where we can take the programme. Exciting times ahead!
What else do you like to do in your spare time? Tell us about your tennis hobby.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing real tennis, hiking, gardening and spending time with family and friends. Trivial pursuit has been a favourite during lockdown too!
