Ballarat and Clarendon College Girls 1st XVIII Football 2013

Posted June 14, 2013.

There was great anticipation going into the Round 1 game. There was so much unknown. The last two years had seen a large number of quality players moving on, their time at the College having to come an end. In Round 1 2013, twelve players were making their debuts; thirteen players had experience, but so few had had substantial ground time in the past. Loreto had been a powerhouse in past seasons and was no doubt looking to recapture past glories. After initial nerves, BCC took the early advantage in the game, scoring 3 goals 2 behinds in the first quarter. BCC continued to dominate the scoreboard, with 2 goals 5 behinds in the second quarter, 2 goals 1 behind in the third, and a very pleasing 5 goals 7 behinds in the fourth. Do note that, although Loreto struggled on the scoreboard, they were physical at the contest. As one observer stated, “The scoreboard suggests BCC dominated, but great effort was needed”. BCC ultimately won the contest 12- 15- 87 to 0- 1- 1.

In the early hours of the 28th June, 18 students, 3 teachers and 2 local Ballarat doctors will board a bus in Ballarat and start a journey that will take them to Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea.  What lies ahead is an experience of a lifetime.  It’s an opportunity for cultural exchange and to have the honour of learning from a very proud culture.  It is with a great sense of privilege that the group embarks on this trip.

Clarendon Checkmate – Chess Club 2013

Posted May 31, 2013.

Chess Club is proving to be even more popular again in 2013. In Terms 1 and 2 so far this year, we have seen 52 students participate in the college’s Chess program. The strength of our playing group was crystallised earlier this Term, on May 9, when Clarendon College hosted the regional interschool Chess tournament. 80 students from around the region participated and Clarendon won all 3 divisions; Primary, Middle Years and Open Secondary. We won the Open Secondary by a half point – Chris ’The Rook’ Darveniza won his last game on board 1 to secure victory! We have now qualified to enter a team of 5 students in each division, for the Victorian State finals to be held later this year in Term 4. Our next major tournament will be in Term 3, where we go to Ballarat Grammar to contest another regional tournament, if we are successful there, we can take an additional 5 players for the relevant division.

At the end of the third week of the new year, I could not be happier with how the year settled. The students are focused, working hard and seemingly very happy to be back and involved.
