Classroom English Teacher – Term 2, 2020

Ballarat Clarendon College is seeking an English Teacher for its residential King Island campus.

 

A residential full-time fixed term position is available to the end of 2020 (with the possibility of extension). As part of an integrated curriculum, the English Teacher will also assist in outdoor education programs and provide instruction in practical educational activities to Year 9 students.

 

Due to the nature of the residential program, a strong focus on pastoral care is a critical aspect of the role. A special requirement of the role is to reside on King Island during school terms; accommodation is provided by Clarendon.

 

King Island Program

Working as part of the King Island program presents staff members with an opportunity to take on a varied and exciting position.

Staff members are responsible for areas of the program, including mentoring a house group of students (typically 6-8 students); academic subjects; outdoor activities, including hikes, surfing and other events during the term; as well as participation in fitness and sporting programs. Staff members will be designated particular areas to co-ordinate.

The working environment is one that is constantly evolving in the pursuit of excellence. The role involves a combination of autonomous work and teamwork and requires strong organisation and communication skills. A typical day is difficult to define as each day generally provides staff with different roles, responsibilities, and start and finish times.

The living environment is part of the Campus community – a shared space between staff and students. Staff are provided with accommodation that may be shared with other staff members.

Living on King Island presents both challenges and benefits. The island is located in the Bass Strait. The local community is around 1,200 people; the school and staff have made strong links within the community.

 

Staff involved in the King Island program find the experience demanding, but extremely rewarding.

Before commencing work at Clarendon teaching staff must be registered with the Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania (https://www.trb.tas.gov.au/Pages/Home.aspx) and the Victorian Institute of Teaching (https://www.vit.vic.edu.au/registering-as-a-teacher).

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications, minimum four years of study.
  • Eligibility for Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania and Victorian Institute of Teaching registration.
  • Strong curriculum understanding and the ability to effectively plan and design lessons.
  • Commitment to and understanding of the use of a range of assessment tools and techniques.
  • Sophisticated knowledge of subject curriculum, study designs and continua.
  • Proven ability to provide feedback to students.
  • Solid understanding of how to analyse data in relation to student progress and teaching effectiveness.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in and out of the classroom.
  • Proven ability to manage time and conflicting priorities effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build rapport with students, staff, parents and all other persons associated with Ballarat Clarendon College.
  • Previous experience working within a team environment with a focus on success and outcomes.
  • The ability to teach English or Mathematics would be highly regarded.
  • Proficient user of information technology.

King Island Specific Information:

 

Staff are expected to actively participate in residential camp duties, including but not limited to, the following:

 

  • Assist students with cooking, cleaning, chopping wood, surfing, hiking, swimming, morning fitness and camp maintenance.
  • Supervise student study sessions.
  • Act as a House Mentor and fulfil all associated responsibilities.
  • Organise and run recreational and outdoor activities for students.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of the campus and equipment.
  • Assist and supervise students in domestic duties.
  • Partake in outdoor trips and activities.
  • Attend overnight activities as determined by the program.
  • Provide staff, students and visitors to the campus with First Aid as required.
  • Complete other tasks related to the running of the program and the care and wellbeing of the students.
  • Four weeks of Middle School camps in Victoria

 

Special requirements:

 

  • Reside on the King Island campus.
  • Travel between campuses as required
  • Relevant Outdoor Education qualifications and/or experience desirable.
  • Wilderness First Aid training essential.
  • Current CPR and Anaphylaxis Certificates.
  • Light rigid bus licence desirable.
  • Surf Rescue qualification desirable.
  • Surfing Instructor training desirable.
  • Snorkelling Instructor credentials desirable.

The salary offered will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s skills, qualifications and experience. Teachers with all levels of experience are encouraged to apply.

As part of the salary package, all staff receive flights on/off King Island. There is a flight on/off at the start and end of each term and one available during the term if staff would like to take advantage of a weekend break in order to ‘de-island’.
