1st XVIII Football Mid Season Report

After 4 rounds of the BAS season the College Senior Boys Football team is unbeaten on top of the ladder.  The players are committed to playing a one on one contested style that includes consistent pressure and covering off (manning up) when the opposition have the ball and fast and efficient ball movement when in possession.

This style has lead to convincing wins by over 100 points against both Ballarat Grammar and Ballarat High School (twice). Highlights from these games include Sam Dunstan kicking 13 goals against High School to win the annual White Ribbon Match Medal, Darcy Tucker demonstrating his elite talent against Grammar in the midfield and up forward and Adam Johnson’s committed approach to the contest in the midfield.  With these wins the team qualified for the next round of the Herald Sun Country Shield which is to be played in the final week of Term 2.

The highlight of the season thus far was the teams win against St. Pats at St. Pats.  The boys played with a fierce determination right from the opening bounce.  Korrey Smith ruck dominance lead to midfielders Matt Davidson (captain) and Darcy Tucker to consistently clear the ball forward to our tall and mobile forward line, who either marked it or brought the ball to ground where small forwards like Cody Grant and Adam Johnson found the ball and subsequently the goals.

With a 5 goals burst in the final minutes of the 3rd quarter and the first 5 minutes of the 4th quarter the College side lead by 4 goals.  In the final 15 minutes of the game St. Pats tried desperately to claw themselves back into the match.   Despite the outstanding efforts of back man Jack Onley, Keegan Mason and Josh Webster St. Pats kicked 3 goals and found themselves down by only 3 points with 2 minutes to go.   In a frantic final few minutes inside the St. Pats forward 50 the College team managed to hang on for an outstanding 3 point victory that will be remembered by all involved for a long time.

The month ahead sees our second matches against both Grammar and St. Pats plus the next match in the Herald Sun Country Shield game.
